We’re back for a long-overdue episode of 30 Days To Better SEO and today we’re going to talk about using HubPages to build clean links. We talked recently about using EzineArticles to get links, and this method isn’t super different.
The whole point of using sites like Ezine and HubPages to get links is to increase your site’s link juice, and ultimately its rankings. You can of course use a bunch of different methods but links from HubPages and Ezine are quite strong, which is why I recommend using them. Stronger links make a much bigger difference in rankings than links from weaker sites.
Steps For Getting Links From HubPages
- Sign up for a free HubPages account.
- Build a hub that’s related to your topic. If you need help, check out the HubPages quick start guide.
- Create a link back to your site, within your hub.
It’s that easy… BUT there are a few things that you should know about getting links from HubPages.
First, they are extremely efficient at not getting spammed. In order to get real links from HubPages you’ll need to create some quality hubs. If your author score isn’t 75 or higher, your links will have nofollows, which take away the link juice. You will have to create a handful of decent hubs to be able to get your score above 75. I would make sure that each of your hubs has at least 400 words of unique content – most of mine have around 800. Yes, that’s a lot but is also the reason that my hubs rank well in Google.
Second, you are only supposed to link out to your site once within your hub. If you link out more than that it will make the hub overly promotional, and it will be de-published until you fix it.
The bonus that comes with this method is that you can use Adsense and affiliate programs to make money with HubPages.

I have been linking out to various sites that I am writing about. Like if I where writing about dog collars I might link out to several places that sell pet supplies, petco etc. Will this hurt my hubs, or should I only link out to 5 other hubs and once to my money blogs.
Well Adam, the site you link to is the site you’re going to help, it’s as simple as that. If you link to Petco, you’ll help Petco. If you link to your blog, you’ll help your blog. There’s nothing wrong with helping Petco but I wouldn’t help them for the same keywords you’re trying to rank for.
I am curious about your rankings? How well do you rank and how much is the competition of the keywords you’re chasing?
Better than some.
I have tried HubPages and Squidoo and although HP has more credibility because of their anti-spamming stance, I find keeping up a blog, building backlinks, writing articles and creating a hub page way too much effort for the return. I could be wrong but I would be interested to know what everyone else thinks about this?
Don’t take this the wrong way Mark(I know, I hate it when people say that to me) – if that’s what you think maybe this isn’t the business for you. It takes a lot of work. I’m not saying that you don’t want to work or anything like that – I’m just saying that this takes a lot of work and it also takes a lot of patience, especially while you’re learning. I definitely won’t be offended if anyone doesn’t want to put in the time. I personally don’t mind putting in the time and effort and get paid very well.
And the best thing is that once you start making a decent income you can invest that back into your business and have other people do the writing part for you for a fraction of the money you’re going to make from it
I didn’t knew the need for having a score of 75. Thanks for sharing.
Court/Mark,
What are the issues involved with using the same Adsense account that you use on your “money sites”? I’ve heard from some that they should be two different accounts. I’ve also heard that you might want to not have the same persona on each one lest someone track down your entire farm.
I’m not using these hubs as a farm so I don’t have that issue. These hubs aren’t linking to any of my sites.
If you were going to link your hubs to your money site I would probably consider getting a second account by setting up an LLC. The bigger your operation is the more I would think about this.
If I am correct, when you apply to Adsense, even with an LLC, you must first enter all your info… name, ssn.. etc, then after you are approved, you enter the LLC, and associated info.
So, therefore, you would need another “name”?
I might be mistaken here but aren’t you sharing the revenue from Adsense with Hubpages meaning that the ads shown on the site is using their Adsense ID and not yours?
Mikael – HubPages is able to share impressions so you get paid in your own Adsense account. The was they do it is very legit, as they have set it up with Google.
Joshua – I personally wouldn’t really worry about using your name on two Adsense accounts but if you’re worried about it, I guess you would have to use a different name.
Thanks Court. So I guess that if you want to use it for link building then you would just forfeit the Adsense income in order to gain maximum benefit.
Well I am not worried about the adsense accounts. I personally have 2 accounts. 1 personal, 1 business. But I would be careful tieing this up as backlinks to another adsense account associated with you.
Yea, Making Money Online is some seriously hard work. You can’t make a couple a websites, get a couple backlinks, make a hubpage and maybe a squidoo lens or two then site back and retire on a beach.
Treat this type of business like a real job and put in the type of hours you do for a regular job — that’s the only way you’ll ever make a significant income through niche marketing.
For some reason (and I blame those fake MMO gurus who spout nonesense like ‘make 30k a month doing nothing’), people don’t seem to realise that this type of thing is an actual JOB. I’m personally putting in a good 6-10 hours a day doing this, 7 days a week.
Ben K
That’s funny Ben mentions that… I’m reading it from my job where we coach students who have ordered a program off of the late night Jeff Paul Internet Millionaire’s Club infomercial.
I’ve noticed that the hubpages hub is the first to get indexed and show up as a backlink. Pretty nice.
Court, thanks for the great writeups and inspiration to get more into Hubpages. I’ve been working with it more since reading about your experiment, and it’s become my new obsession. Already have seen a bit of Adsense income from it in the first few days and will keep building new Hubs. I find them slightly easier to make then Squidoo lenses.
My questions involve linking to and from your Hubpage;
1) Do you know what policy or rule Craigslist has about linking to a Hubpage if any?
2) What type of links are off limits for putting on a Hub? i.e. affiliate products, Amazon links, ebay partner, etc..?
I noticed one link I recently did was marked over promotional, it had 5 links to the same blog…I removed 3, resubmitted and it was approved.
Thanks again for all your help!
Hey Court thanks for the HubPages tips. This short post taught me a couple things I didn’t know about HubPages… the score over 75 and the one link out rules.
Hi Court,
If the Hub Challenge weren’t going on, but you were writing just as many hubs or more, would you:
a) Publish them all on HubPages,
or
b) Divide them equally between HubPages, InfoBarrel, Xomba, and DevHub — basically publishing one hub on each platform per keyword and interlinking the 4 publications written on one keyword?
Which method would you expect to make more money over the short and long-term?
I hope I wrote that clearly.
Thank you.

when creating hub pages, do you literally plan to make all 100 on the same account? It seems like having more quality hub pages on the same account is better, but would you reccomend creating seperate accounts, maybe 10 hubs per account to avoid losing everything if your account is deleted?
Link building with hubpages works well and I would recommend it to anyone!
Court, gotta give you some more praise man. After months of being unable to rank page 1 on Google for a particular competitive keyword phrase, putting links in just 2 hubs I created did the trick! I’ve now created 13 hubs and still going! The link power of these things is pretty nice once you get them set up and as “dofollow” links.
Court knows what he’s talking about. Model what he suggests and you’ll see results too!
Two things:
First, I found that getting a decent author rating isn’t too hard. I have made only two hubs, and have a current author rating of 84 (subject to change, obviously). For proof, visit the URL I included with my name. Now I am in the works of making a hub that is relevant to my site, and to build juice just as this article says.
Second, I would like to know about how you link keywords like “make money” to the homepage of the site. Is this an SEO technique? I would be interested in learning more about that.
Thanks for opening my eyes to the money-making possibilities of HubPages!
Another question about Adsense:
I have made three hubs thus far and have already gotten a few clicks on one of the hubs but no pay out. What does this mean? Is this normal or is there something I need to do to ensure I am getting paid for the clicks?
I appreciate all the information you are sharing and look forward to hearing back.
Actually i was not clear about Hubpage, now i am clear about hubpage. This is really good tips, thanks for sharing this.
jusr read this and went over to Hub to set up an account. thanks for the headsup, and the point about linking out and several hubs….gracias,
I found this post very helpful in my internet marketing undertaking. Thanks and keep this coming!
@Carole – You’re going to need a lot more than a few clicks. Remember, just a fraction of your visitors are actually going to click on your Adsense ads (That’s where the payout is coming from). Focus on getting more traffic and you should see results.
@Ben – As discussed in the core videos, Court says to follow a simple rule when using keywords in the anchor text for inbound links-
Use the site title 50% of the time
Use the main keyword 25% of the time
Use related keywords 25% of the time
Thank you for the article. good read.
Thanks for the tip, i really didnt know the need for a score 75 on hubpages, i just realised i couldnt get a decent link out from my huppage. I have a hubpages article that became pr2 in less than 3 weeks. And i just could not link out to my site. Now i see the reason. im just a score 65….. But how does one reach the 75 mark on hubpages?
Thanks for tips. I always wondered why Hubpages kept flagging me. Its because of the links. Thanks you helped me alot.
I’ve been using Hubpages and Squidoo lens to build back links for my DJ blog
It’s pretty great because often I’ll write an article that is waaaay too long for my readers (I often end up drabbling on and on about subjects) so I edit them down to manageable sizes.
The left overs don’t go to waste though.
I continue with the theme of what I was writing to create a highly focused article within the scope I was writing about.
It’s a great way to use up all of your creative writing to benefit your blog
Am i allowed to website up to this, by my own internet page? I’m about to get as much sources of information as i am able.
I create hub pages daily. I use Link farm evolution. I don’t know how you feel about automation, but I think of it as micromanaging.
I also think when doing hub pages, there is a lot of keyword research needed to have successful hub pages. Again, I turn to automation when I do my keyword research.
Idk, what are your views on automation?
niche marketing has been the backbone of my money making websites:-.
Glad I found this tidbit on google when I was perusing the internet. Good STUFF!
niche marketing is great for selling affiliate products;”:
