It’s time for another experiment here at The Keyword Academy. We love doing experiments – they help us to open our minds to new possibilities and they push us to make progress. If you missed our last few experiments, you can find them here:
This experiment should be an interesting one. Here are the details:
- I’m going to pick 30 URLs that currently get little or no traffic
- Each day I will focus my efforts on one URL and build five links to that URL (this will obviously give me 150 new links in 30 days)
Principles Behind The Experiment
The principle in play here is simple – when you’re able to get more links for your URLs, they will bring more traffic. This will work whether your URLs are all on one site or across many. I personally am going to do all of my work on one site. It should be a little more effective that way since all of the added juice will be directed at the one site. You should still see a benefit if you spread your links across two different sites or 30 different sites.
Rules For Getting Links
For this experiment, all of the links must be single links. You can use article links, link trades, guest posts, or any other method for getting links – as long as you’re getting one link at a time. This rules out mass article distribution/social bookmarking, etc.
I’ll be providing more details on my personal strategy in the TKA forum.
The experiment starts today: January 21, 2010. I won’t be working Sundays on the experiment so it will end February 24, 2010. I of course will track the progress and provide updates.

Is there going to be any rules ont he quality of links? What about themes.
For example 5 crap forum links will have hardly any effect wheras 5 real links on a quality website, on a quality page will have a massive effect.
Being a link builder, I’m interested in this experiment a lot.
Cheers,
Joe
I’m going to do quite a bit of guest posting during this experiment so that I can get links from solid pages, but no there aren’t any rules. People will be allowed to get whatever links they want. The point of the experiment is to get people working harder on getting links.
This is exciting! As a member of TKA I have needed some motivation to go back and build links. Sometimes, I enjoy just writing new content and link building can feel like “going backwards” a bit, but I know I need to do it. I want to join in on this challenge.
Do it!
Hi Court, great test.
I will be joining in on this.
It also gives me some fodder for my latest blog, thanks.
I’ll let you know my results.
Let me know the results for sure Bruce – I’d love to hear how it went for you.
I’m in. The timing is perfect. I have my 120 green keyword posts on my supersite and also did some link building already. However, I need to step it up now.
So I’m ready!
Sounds great Dieter – I’m sure that this will help you out quite a bit!
how do you choose the link? randomly choose? anyone can get picked?
I’m guessing that you’re asking how I’m going to choose the URLs. I’m just going to pick 30 that have little or no traffic!
Great idea. Fun to see the chatter and excitement this experiment has generated in the member forum.
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out for all of the participants.
I’ve always loved your experiment, it actually motivated me to start my own. One, honestly it was a failure but I have always wanted to try another one and I have started it 3 weeks ago, mine it is a bit more elaborated than your meaning I have a target of traffic/or income per site, not that exact as yours but I am looking forward to see results both on my side and yours.
another thing, i have try to download the free ebook at the opt in above but it appears that the file is damage. this hava happen so many times. what i can do? maybe somebody need to fix it.
Ok I do not understand what you are about to do but I would love to know
Court, most of the time you have the opportunity to get two links per article, guest post, etc. What about pairing up the links so that over the course of the 30 days each url would get 5 links, but each link would be on a page that is linking to another one of the 30 urls?
The following quote is from Court in the forums regarding this question:
“I’m going to make sure that each URL gets 5 links. There’s no difference between the first and second link from an article. What this means I guess is that if I did five articles in a day (this would give me 10 links) I would get to take the next day off.
”
Thanks R.J. my thoughts exactly hahahahaha.
I asked in the forum but just in case…
Court – Are you consider the link for that day completed when it is written and submitted or posted? If we submit an article on monday but it does not get approved till friday, is that link good for monday, or friday??
btw-another reason i love this place, the constant motivation and challenges.
Yeah Lisa I’ll ’submit’ five per day but will make sure that they all get in before the completion of the experiment. I might have to do a little extra work if people take time to approve but that’s ok!
Great challenge! I actually try to get 5 links every day already, so this shouldn’t be too hard
I would love to see how it goes. I am a newbie here and don’t know much about these things. You will select the links at random?
This is really an interesting experiment. My only problem is time
Im gonna do this also….I have a 40 page site that I never did linking for yet and its about 6 months old…
I am going to get “at least” 1 EZA link, 1 Youtube link, 1 profile link, 1 blog comment and 1 blog post link per day for the 30 days.
I will start tomorrow can’t wait!
Count me in. I’ll be trying this one with my new blog and see how this experiment affects the every aspect my new blog – with regards to the traffic, PR, and all other stuff.
I’ll be starting today (I’m on GMT +8 – Manila Time)
Great Post BTW.
Scratch the youtube links just seen that they are nofollow now
I like the consistent aspect of the experiment: the exact same number of links generated everyday. I am definitely in, and I’m pretty sure the returns will be surprising. Now just have to stick to the plan
If you have a site that has low traffic, I assume that the main url qualifies for this experiment?

A good idea & possibly a good experiment. But I’m thinking hw r u going to pick up the URLs.Though u said low traffic ones.hw will u identify or choose them ? ?
http://thekeywordacademy.com/how-to-pick-your-urls-for-the-challenge/ – this should help!
Hello Court
How exactly do I select and add links? Can you guide?
Anita
Very helpful challenge. I’ve been building links from my Xomba and eHow to my passive income blog for a couple weeks now, at a rate of over 5 per day. The links are almost 100% focussed on my homepage and have driven some decent traffic already. It helps when you have close to 100 articles to link from though. Now to find other places to build links.
Does this comment count? I hope so
Hi Court,
Any chance of an update? Links and traffic are a real weakness of mine, and I’d like to know how you do before choosing my next course.
Thanks
Hi Court,
I read your eBook. (BTW, very well written) And have spent many hours trying to find a “Green” keyword but just keep running into endless keywords with something like 2,2,3,1 PR’s on Google. I just cannot find any of the coveted keywords with the top 4 being only 1 & 2’s. Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Otis
it puts me to shame how simple some of these challenges are, to see how you can benefit by participating really shows how important it is to set goals, no matter how big or small because planning actually helps get the job done!
It is a bit easy to make money online if you know how to get lots and lots of visitors on your website and if you have very good content on your website. you can use adsense, adbrite or infolinks.
5 links a day is a great idea. If I did that every single day I would have 1,825 links in a year.
