Introduction

In 2005, I came across a forum thread where people were talking about making money with Google, eBay, and Amazon. During that time period I also met a guy who made all of his money promoting eBay. I had no idea how any of it worked but I was really interested. I didn’t love my job and was looking for an out.

…fast forward to 2010.

In the last five years I have successfully made the transition from knowing absolutely nothing to making a lot of money with Google. This article will share some insights into how this is possible.

Google Does NOT Hire People To Work From Home

When I first started hearing about making money with Google, I assumed that they hired people to work from home. As far as I know, this isn’t the case. In the last five years, I have never met a person who works from home, for Google. However, I know a lot of people who making money by promoting Google’s programs. I also know a lot of people who make a lot of money because they use Google as a source of traffic to their websites.

How To Get Started

In order to start making money with these methods, you really need to have your own website. Fortunately, this isn’t difficult at all. I have a free e-book that will walk you through the process of setting up a site. Having your own site is cheap and somewhat easy. If you want to learn how to set up your own site, you can learn by downloading the e-book here (it also tells the story of exactly how I went from making nothing to more than $15,000 per month).

How The Money Is Actually Made

Google’s money is made by producing clicks for advertisers. This happens in two places:

On Google’s search engine – Google.com

On other people’s websites (your site can be one of these)

The second program is called Google Adsense. As part of the program, Google allows people who have websites to place ads on their website’s pages. When their visitors click on an ad, Google gets paid. Google shares that revenue with the website owner.

This means that you can start a website, place Google ads on it, and get paid when your visitors click on an ad. On average, you can count on around 5% of your website’s visitors to click on an ad. The amount you get paid varies but is usually somewhere between $0.10 and $1.00 per click. The science of getting higher paying clicks is also covered in my free e-book.

How To Get Visitors To Your Website

The visitors that I get on my websites come from a variety of sources. One of my biggest sources of traffic is Google.com. I put articles on my websites that I believe will match up with what people are searching for. This allows my websites to show up in Google’s search engine. People click on my site and visit. Around 5% of them click on an ad and I get paid.

I’m not going to include tips for getting traffic in this guide, but it’s all in the free e-book.

2009 has been by far my best year ever for making money on the internet. Despite the recession, my online businesses have grown amazingly well and that’s the beauty of running a business that gives you a limitless upside. When your business is online, you can create profit from all over the world – what a beautiful thing. I noticed today that one of my sites has had visitors from 176 different countries in 2009.

How crazy is that? It’s obviously a lot easier to produce a lot of money when the world is your marketplace.

Making money online is one of the most exciting things out there, but it’s also one of the hardest things to learn. There will be more money to be made in 2010 than ever. However, it will also be harder to learn. Why? Because there will be more and more garbage to sort through. There will be more crap blogs to read and more ebooks written by people who only know how to make money by selling ebooks. If you get sucked in by too many of these products, you will find it very difficult to get anywhere. You will find the information to be very contradictory and that will cause you to freeze up as you try to implement what you have learned.

If you would like for 2010 to be an awesome year for making money, this guide will serve as a road map. If you get off track, revisit the concepts presented here. They have helped me to create a lot of income for myself and have also helped me to avoid putting time into things that don’t pay off.

1. Follow your interests. I believe that one of the biggest reasons I have done well is that I have always either created sites that I was really passionate about, or have been able to get really interested in the topics I wanted to create sites about. I have made plenty of money with other types of sites (that I wasn’t as interested in) but my sites that have really flourished are that ones that I like the most.

2. Develop web real estate, aka build web sites. There are a lot of ways to make money online, but there’s only one that can provide you with near-residual income. Plan out sites, get them up, and start developing. If you want to produce in 2010 you need to start now. Income doesn’t appear overnight.

If you have already created some sites you’re ahead of the game. If they aren’t producing, move on to #3.

3. Research, research, research. Liking the topic of your websites can definitely help you to grow your income, but this won’t happen if there isn’t a market for the information/products your provide. Take a look at whether there are already sites that cover the topic you’re thinking about. If there are, it’s a good thing – it means that there’s probably money there and you’ll be able to emulate some of the things that those sites are doing.

Digging into your markets to discover additional keywords and subtopics is a hugely important aspect of the game we play. There are probably a lot of untapped traffic sources that you haven’t found, simply because you haven’t looked hard enough.

4. Help a lot of people. Your site will produce 100 times more if you want to really help people along the way. I get a lot of satisfaction out of knowing that what we’re doing here at The Keyword Academy helps people to produce real income. In our forum we have earnings badges that help us to see how our members are doing and there’s a huge payoff every time I see people with new badges (this is especially true when I see earnings badges pop up for members from third world countries). Since we really care about helping the people who use our site, it makes it a lot easier to market. Our members help us to get the word out because they know how much we can help the people they know.

If you’re only in it for the money, it’s going to be a lot harder for you. No matter what the topic of your site is, there will be people who have problems and questions. If you can figure out ways to provide them with solutions to those problems, you won’t have any trouble getting business or traffic.

5. Reduce your information intake. The people I know who make a lot of money online spend very little time reading blogs, watching videos, and interacting with their online pals. A certain degree of interaction is important for everyone, but money comes because of work. If you spend all of your time trying to learn, you aren’t getting much closer to actually producing income. In fact, you might be filling your mind with knowledge that will be detrimental to your success.

Don’t get me wrong, knowledge is very important. However, it can also become a huge addiction that can waste way too much time. Be wary of unproven sources of information.

6. Focus on volume. If your site provides information, provide a lot of information. If your site provides tools, provide a lot of useful tools. Creating more content will help you to increase your site’s traffic, especially if you’re creating keyword rich content. You may be trying to figure out why you have little traffic. A mental shift toward increasing volume can be extremely beneficial. A site that only has one keyword rich article would perform a lot better with 10. A site with 10 keyword rich articles would perform a lot better with 100. A site with 100 would perform a lot better with 1000.

Think about the people who would read your site and map out all of the information that they will need to accomplish their goals. In a lot of niches this will give you an unlimited supply of topics to cover.

Ask any real marketer and they will tell you that search traffic converts better than any type of traffic, for sales, clicks, and leads. In order to create that traffic you will need to do your research well and then create content based around your research. If you create more content, you can obviously plan on getting more search traffic. You should read our 100 blog posts experiment if you need further proof.

7. Squeeze the orange. In other words, think about how to get more from your existing traffic. Is there a product that you can create and sell? Can you upsell from that product? Can you sell more advertising? Can you use better placement on pay-per-click ads such as Adsense? Can you sell more affiliate product?

Some of the biggest gains I have been able to make in income in 2009 came with no traffic increase. Mark and I talk all the time about how we can get more out of our projects and when you have it on your mind, ideas will manifest themselves.

On July 27th, I started a very interesting experiment. I decided to find 100 keywords that weren’t super competitive, write blog posts about them on one of my blogs, and track the results. I believed that if I chose the right keywords, I could create a lot of extra income.

The experiment produced great results:

During the first week, the experiment produced $371.98.

During the second week, the experiment produced $678.62.

During the third week, the experiment produced $780.40.

During the last 9 days, the experiment produced $848.59.

That means that the grand total of the 30 days was $2,679.59:

Obviously I’m pretty happy about how well the experiment went. It goes to show that know which keywords to post about can go a long way.

Now that this experiment is said and done, I can offer some advice for people who are thinking about taking on a project like this. There are a few things that come to mind:

Spend enough time on the research phase. Choosing the right keywords is key. If you have keywords that are too difficult, it will be pretty difficult to get amazing results. If you have worthless keywords, they won’t produce any income, even if they produce traffic (You can use the Adwords Tool to look at the prices advertisers are buying traffic for).

Learn how to write well. I’m not saying that I’m a world class writer. I know that I’m not. However, I try hard to write posts that will give people the information that they are looking for. I can tell you that I get a lot of natural links because of that and it makes all the difference in the world. If you can learn how to write what people are looking for, you’ll be better off in the long run.

Consider keywords when you write. I would still focus on writing what people are looking for, but it would be completely stupid to not include your keyword(s) in your writing. I try not to think about keyword density and that stuff – I simply make sure that my keywords can be found within my blog posts.

Stretch yourself. Doing a lot of writing is difficult for anyone. However, volume is a key aspect of the game and the more content you have, the easier it is to get traffic.

Continue to develop your sites. There are a lot of people out there who jump from site to site to site and there are some fundamental problems with that. In order to really get a site to perform well you have to continue to develop it over time. As time passes it starts to work in your favor, as long as you continue to develop. People usually quit before they get that far but if you can get there, you can make some pretty crazy things happen.

The biggest lesson that I learned through this experiment is that volume matters. It isn’t the only thing that matters, but it matters. It seems that most of us don’t push ourselves as much as we should to accomplish more and sometimes it takes a challenge or an experiment like this to get us to actually perform.

The experiment took a lot longer to put together than expected. Sorry for the delay – I had to change a bunch of things so that I could track earnings. I had inserted Adsense code manually on the posts that were already on the site and getting that code out of a larger site was a big ordeal. Installing an ad manager to serve different ads on different posts was another ordeal but I didn’t want to make the problem worse by inserting one ad unit at a time.

I FINALLY have everything working in a way that will allow me to track earnings separately on the 100 blog posts and the experiment will start today! I’ll be updating you next Monday.

Honestly I’m a little blown away at how well my new make money experiment is going. Right now I’m well ahead of the pace I need to sustain to get to 100 hubs and they are seriously outperforming my expectations.

I’ve already done a lot of work, but it has definitely been worth it. The nice thing about committing myself to this experiment here on the blog is that it’s easier to motivate myself to get it done. So far I’ve been doing the experiment for a week and have written about 40 solid hubs. So far the experiment has made $56.20 (it’s 100% Adsense income). I expect the experiment to yield at least $300 this month and more than $1000 next month. I’m sure that you’re going to want to know where I’m getting these numbers from. I haven’t made a spreadsheet for this or anything but generally speaking, any web property will perform better as time goes on. I see this time and time again and know that these hubs probably aren’t going to get worse, they’re going to get better.

By the end of the experiment I will also have 60 more hubs out there and that adds to the potential. I would expect them to perform just as well as the ones I have so even if the hubs I already have stay the same, I should make $140.50 during the last week of the experiment. That’s approximately $56.20 for the hubs I have and $83 for the 60 hubs that I still need to make.

The total income for each of the next two weeks should be somewhere between the $56.20 and the $140. It could be better than that or slightly worse – we’re just going to have to see.

The $1000 number for next month is based on the fact that there is almost always more traffic to be had after the pages are up for more than a month. If they produce $140 during the last week of the 30 day experiment, they should for sure average over $200 for next month and probably over $250.

General Advice For Making Money With HubPages

Target non-competitive keyword phrases that have decent Adwords CPCs.

Make solid hubs. Most of my hubs are at least 800 original words and contain useful links, feeds, news, and videos.

Give links from hubs to related hubs that you have.

Today I wanted to tell you guys a few stories that I hope will help you when you sit down to work. I really hope that they’ll help you to see things a little more clearly. Sometimes there’s no substitute for experience and since some of you are pretty new at this, I thought that I could show you a few lessons – I’m sure that you’re going to run into the same roadblocks I’ve run into in the past few days.

As most of you know, last week I wrote about a new making money online experiment. I’m going to be creating 100 hubs on HubPages. When I wrote about the experiment I talked about how I was amazed at how well the few hubs I had were performing.

When I first started on HubPages, I created just a few hubs and didn’t really put any time into them. I didn’t try to get any other sites to link to them or anything, I was just going off of the strength that’s already on HubPages. It worked and I was very quickly earning $3 or $4 per day. That led me to want to try a much larger experiment with HubPages, which I am now doing.

The guys at HubPages got involved and asked me to wait until Monday to start so that they could issue a challenge to their members. I went with that, so Monday was my first day of making hubs.

My First Day Of Creating New Hubs

A very interesting thing happened on Monday and it’s a little thing, but I thought that sharing it might help a few of you. I worked quite a bit on my hubs Monday and I was all suped up to get a bunch of hubs done. I got curious about how much my existing hubs had made on Adsense, so I decided to check it out. I logged into my Adsense account to find that I had made exactly $0 from my hubs. As much as I try to act like I’m invinceable – I’m not. I was bugged. I had gotten myself all pumped up and honestly that stole a lot of my energy. Even though I was bugged, I decided to work anyway and got my hubs done.

Later that night I decided to make some more hubs. Stupidly, I logged into my Adsense account to see how I was doing with my existing hubs. I had made a whopping $0 for the day. No matter who you are this is deflating. I thought back to when I was a newbie and how almost every day was like this, except much worse. See, now it’s easier for me because even though my hubs hadn’t made anything, my Adsense account still looks pretty dang good. I know that many of you don’t have that luxury right now. To tell you the truth that didn’t help me a ton, I was still really bugged that my hubs hadn’t made anything.

Naturally you start to ask yourself questions. You don’t want to waste your own time. “Am I doing this right?”, “Is this really going to pay off?”

At that point in the game you have two options. You can accept defeat or you can fight through it. I chose to fight through it. I don’t think I’m all that great or anything, I’m fortunate to have experience on my side. I know that it will work if I pay the price. I decided to let the roadblock motivate me to massive action. I had 8 hubs done by the time I went to bed.

A pattern that I’ve seen again and again in my life is that if I will persist through adversity, I get rewarded. Yesterday I made $8.55 off of my new hubs. That isn’t a million dollars but it might as well be – it feels like a million dollars to me. Adversity tried to shut me down on Monday and I overcame it.

Making money online is a very mental game. You have to get yourself to believe that you’re going to overcome.

A Solid Hub Dropped From The Rankings

I found a really solid keyword and decided to make a hub about it. Those of you that are paid members of the crash course here know exactly how I go about choosing my keywords and this keyword is a real winner. I created the hub and was STOKED to find that it ranked top 10 in Google within a few hours of publishing the post. It’s obviously never a bad thing to pop right into the rankings out of the gate.

The interesting thing is that this morning, that hub is nowhere to be found. I have to believe that this has happened to a bunch of you because it happens to me all the time with all different types of sites, posts, and static pages. Poof! Ghandi…

There we go again guys – these are the deflating obstacles that we all have to face every day. I bet when this happens to you, you start questioning whether you’re doing it right or not. I bet you start questioning me and the methods I outline. I bet you consider giving up. Don’t do it. These things have a way of working themselves out.

My hub isn’t gone for good in fact I can all but guarantee that it will be back and better than ever. When this stuff happens you have to go back to the basics and make sure your bases are covered. The basics are targeting the keyword and using links to strengthen the post, hub, or page.

Guys I can promise you that when all is said and done, it’s going to come down to those two things. The mystical force that booted my hub from the rankings is just a fickle, stupid thing. I probably had enough links from HubPages.com to make it show up in the SERPs and when those links dropped from wherever they were, it dropped out. I’ll give it a few links from other hubs and it will be right back where it was before. This might take a week or more and I’m not going to beat myself up over what happened. I’ve seen pages resurrect themselves a hundred times and this time isn’t going to be any different.

This might be hard to stomach but in the end no one deserves to do great things if they can’t overcome obstacles. Our minds fight against us every day and we have to learn how to persevere. When you get knocked down you have to get back up.

When I really need a pick-me-up, here’s a video that I like to watch. I hope you guys like it as much as I do.

Lately I’ve been cooking up some new experiments. I’m not going to lie – I frakkin LOVE experiments. I always learn a ton when I do them and they fit inline with one of my personal mottos which is ‘GO BIG OR GO TO BED’. If you missed my last experiment you should check it out:

30 Articles In 30 Days

Results – 30 Articles In 30 Days

What led me to this next experiment is actually quite interesting…

I have created some hubs lately on HubPages to help promote some other sites and pages that I have. Hubs seemed to be pretty strong pages so I figured that I could pass some link juice to other sites and pages that I have. I created my first hub and pointed a link to a page, only to find that the link was nofollowed. That means that the link wasn’t going to pass any juice to my page so I did some searching and figured out that HubPages gives you a score as an author and you have to maintain a score above 74 (out of 100) to get links that don’t have nofollows on them.

I did some more reading and figured out that it isn’t that tough to get a score of 74 and that I could get there by creating a few more hubs. This REALLY annoyed me lol. I thought it was stupid that I had to do extra work just to get a link I mean I was giving them free content, after all. I dediced that I had already created one so I might as well create a few more so that I can get the juice from the first one. I figured that I could get some juice from the additional hubs I created as well so I thought ‘what the heck’.

I ended up with five or six hubs and let them sit for a few weeks so that I could get the juice to my original pages. It was during that time that I decided that I might as well use the Adsense feature on HubPages because I figured that they would get some traffic eventually. HubPages does a 60/40 split with you on Adsense impressions. That to me was really annoying because even though you get 60% and HubPages gets 40%, it seemed like a lot to be giving when you’re the one that creates the content for the hub. Even though I was annoyed I decided to do it anyway because I created the hubs to get the links and I figured that a click here and there wouldn’t be that bad.

I activated Adsense in my account. The next day I checked it and found out that I had made like $4. I thought, “that has to be a fluke.” I checked the next day and had made another $3. I was honestly shocked. I figured that I really wouldn’t make hardly anything because I hadn’t done that much and HubPages was getting 40% of the Adsense impressions.

Since then I’ve made some more hubs and have figured out that the authority of the domain makes it pretty dang easy to get search traffic. At first the math didn’t make sense in my head and if you know me you know that if the math doesn’t work, I can’t move forward. It wasn’t working in my mind until I realized that getting rankings seemed much more than 40% easier on HubPages.

I had never really seen HubPages as a viable method for making money online but suddenly I find myself very curious and surprisingly confident that I can make a ton with HubPages and Adsense.

The Experiment

I find that if I’m going to really find out how viable any system is as a money maker, I have to jump in full steam. So far I’ve only been flirting with HubPages and I’m ready to take our relationship to the next level. In the next 30 days I will be creating at least 100 hubs. That means I’m going to have to do some serious planning over the next few days and then unleash a fairly large amount of content. I know that the amount of content I’m going to want to use for each hub (around 400 words) will cost me either 30 minutes or $5 if I hire someone. I don’t have 50 hours to spend on this but I’ll figure out how to make ends meet somehow.

I would like to invite you to join my in this experiment. I know with 100% certainty that I will make some extra money with this. It’s impossible to know how much but I feel that it’s going to be pretty significant. There will also be huge benefits from having additional, juicy pages that I can use to link to projects that I already have.

If you would like to join in, run over to HubPages, sign up for an account, and leave a comment here telling the group what you’re willing to commit to. I don’t really want any “I’ll see how many I can get done” stuff going on. Commit yourselves to a number of hubs and stick to it. I am excessively busy and I’ve still committed to creating between three and four hubs per day for a month straight. I better go buy some Mountain Dew.

Well, I certainly do know how to make money ‘posting links’ on Google, and most of the people that read my site also know how. If you’ve seen these ads before and would like to learn (or would like to simply know what this means), this explanation is for you.

Here’s How It Works (Video)

If you want to try out our program that teaches you to make money with Google, go here.

Google obviously makes a lot of money, and they do that primarily by selling advertising spots on their search engine. That’s why when you go to Google.com and do a search, you always see a bunch of sponsored (paid) listings. Google gets paid when people click on the sponsored listings as they have deals with hundreds of thousands of advertisers that are willing to pay for the traffic that comes from the clicks. Each of these advertisers pays for each click that is generated by Google.

In order to make more profit, Google created a program that allows people that have sites to post Google’s sponsored ads for a share of the profit. Google pays about 50% of the profit to person who posted sponsored links on their website. The program is called Adsense, and it’s free to use.

As long as you can put up a website that gets traffic, you can post Google’s links on the site’s pages and Google will cut you a check each month for your share of the revenue. I love making money this way because it happens 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Every morning I wake up with money in my Google account and it continues to come in during the day. Each month Google sends me the funds via direct deposit (they can do a check if you prefer that).

I see ads all the time on Facebook and in other places that say ‘make money by posting links on Google’. The people that write the ads word them this way because ‘make money with Adsense’ doesn’t make any sense to a person that hasn’t heard of this concept before.

How Does A Person Actually Post Links On Google?

You post links on Google by creating articles for your site that are related to what people are searching for. For example, I created this article because I knew you would be searching for it. Google found it and linked to it in their search results, and that led you to it.

Our specialty on The Keyword Academy is teaching beginners how to make money by using this method. We can help you to learn how to create a site that gets listed in Google’s search results, bringing traffic to your articles, and getting some of the visitors to click on a Google sponsored ad, and that gets you paid.

If you’re interested in learning how to make money this way, what you need to do is start by reading our e-book (it’s free). It’s called The Keyword Crash Course and it teaches you how to make money by getting links to your articles in Google and making money when people click on the sponsored links you have on your site. You can download the e-book by entering your email and hitting ’submit’:

Those of you that have been reading our site already know how to do this!

The other day Mark and I were laughing about how unbelievably addicting Google Adsense is. Mark had just installed Adsense on a newer site and made $3 his first day. I don’t know why but having a $3 day on a new site is sometimes more exciting than making thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars at a job. Those who have had their first $3 day on a new site know that income just keeps growing and growing if you know how to ‘feed’ it. Every five and six figure Adsense earner once started by getting their first click.

Every guide I’ve read about making money with Adsense is about the same – they tell you that all you have to do is:

Put some Google ads on a web page.

‘Drive’ traffic to the web page (what does this even mean?).

Sleep all day and watch the money roll in.

The problem with all of these guides is that they leave out all the important steps. They aren’t going to give you a real road map that tells you how to get the traffic. They aren’t going to tell you what types of traffic to go after. They aren’t going to tell you which niches pay. They aren’t going to give you all of the classic pitfalls that 99% of the ‘make money onlinerz’ fall into.

Making Money With Adsense Can Be Complicated

I’m going to just say it straight up – learning to make money with Google Adsense can be pretty complicated. A lot of things can go wrong and you need to learn what these things are so that you can avoid them.

I started making money with Google Adsense over four years ago and honestly, I have a pretty good grasp of the problems that you can run into. I want to outline some of the things that can get in your way, and then provide you with some of the solutions I’ve been able to come up with.

Creating A Web Page

One of the hardest parts of making Adsense money is learning how to create webpages/websites. If you’re going to make money this way, creating web pages is a necessity.

When I first started, I had to learn to create pages using HTML. This was an extremely tedious process. It took me months and hundreds of hours of work to put my first site together. I would skip this step completely.

If you’re just starting out, I would recommend first learning to create sites with Blogger. Blogger is 100% free and fairly easy to use. Many people are already using Blogger to create family type blogs and the transition into making money with it is fairly simple.

A temptation that you’re going to have when you start with Blogger is that you’re going to want to create the perfect looking sites. Don’t do this. I would pick one of the introductory templates and stick with it until you’re making a healthy income. Spending a ton of time on the look of your site won’t help with traffic and trust me, traffic will be the biggest hurdle you have to overcome.

Once you have mastered Blogger, you can start to learn how to use a similar program called WordPress. Learning WordPress will allow you to create sites on domains that you buy and this will give you a little more flexibility with your site.

There honestly isn’t a huge need to ever leave Blogger. I know a lot of people that make great money using Blogger to create sites that are monetized with Adsense.

Getting Traffic

Bringing traffic is definitely the most important skill of anyone who wants to use Adsense to make money. This isn’t exactly something that we can cover in a single article, but I want to give you the basics so that you can get started.

The most important thing you need to know about getting traffic for Adsense is that organic search traffic is the only way to go. Social traffic blows for Adsense. Social visitors won’t click on your ads and even if they do, they’re junk leads for the advertisers buying the clicks. If the people that click your ads aren’t a good fit for the advertisers, Google will pay you less (considerably less) than people who provide better leads.

People that are searching in Google for information on a certain topic are by far the best fit for Adsense ads. For example, let’s take a person that searches for ‘How To Get Student Loans’ in Google. They are probably a student that needs financial aid right? So they find your web page about ‘How To Get Student Loans’, where they find an ad that offers a good rate on a student loan and !CLICK!, you have yourself a couple bucks.

This scenario creates a win-win. The advertiser bought the right kind of visitor and you got paid for it. Social traffic on the other hand won’t be a good fit for this advertiser. Sure, some students may find your page socially, but amongst the social visitors will be mostly people that aren’t the best fit. This will lower the amount of clicks you can get from social traffic and will also be providing consistently poor leads for advertisers. This means Google is going to pay you a lot less than they will pay people that can get search traffic.

Getting organic search traffic from Google and other search engines is obviously a matter of getting ranked for keywords that people are searching for. If you come up #1 in Google for a popular keyword phrase, a lot of people are going to click into your site and they will be exactly the type of people you need.

Google, Yahoo, and MSN are the ‘big three’ search engines and they are getting a lot closer to each other than they used to be. Getting ranked in all three of them take the same basic strategies. You have to put the right content on the page using onsite SEO, and then work on getting links that will strengthen your rankings. Each of these search engines use links in a major way to determine which web pages are the best.

In the last four years, I have chased almost every type of traffic out there and honestly, organic search traffic is the only type that’s worthwhile if you want to make money with Adsense. If you want to get started in the search traffic game, you will probably want to read my Introduction To SEO.

Another traffic related issue that you can run into is going after the wrong keywords. If you choose the wrong keywords, they may not really be worth much. They can actually be worth nothing if they never bring you any traffic, and they can also be worth very little by way of click prices. If you’re only getting $0.01 per click, it’s going to take a load to make anything at all.

I’m not going to outline all of the concepts here, so you’re going to have to read some of the other articles I linked to to learn these concepts.

Adsense Optimization

The next problem you can run into is not getting enough people to click your Google ads. Optimizing your Adsense can be a lengthy process, but it’s almost always worthwhile. Obviously if you can get more people to click, you get paid more from the same amount of traffic. Here are the basics of how I make sure I get my Adsense properly optimized:

1. Test placement first. On every site I have, I start by first testing the placement of my ads. There are three main placements that have worked for me. The first is the 336×280 large rectangle placed above the page titles like Griz from Make Money For Beginners does. This is by far my favorite placement and usually does a great job of getting a high percentage of search visitors to click an ad. The second placement I like is the same large rectangle ad unit with the text of the page wrapping around it. The third I like is the 728×90 leaderboard stretched across the top of the page.

In order to test between these three placements, it’s very simple. You will give each placement 500 impressions worth of search traffic and you will go with the one that gets the most clicks. Yes, it’s that simple.

2. Test colors second. Once you know which placement will get the most clicks, it’s time to test colors. I usually test a few different colors, the first being the same color that your site uses for links. If your links are green, use green. If they’re blue, use blue. This generally helps the ads to blend in and that’s a good thing. After I test the matching link color, I will usually test a generic blue (color #OOOOFF). This one still works well, as it’s the color people most associate with links. I will then thirdly test a color very opposite to my site’s links. I will give each color 500 impressions and will go with the one that produces the most clicks.

The background color I go with always matches the theme exactly and I never test anything else (not that I haven’t tested different colors before – I certainly have). Matching backgrounds almost always get more clicks.

Summary

Making money with Google Adsense is simple if you can learn all of the concepts. You have to learn keyword research, onsite SEO, offsite SEO and link building, and Adsense optimization. If you can do that, you’ll do great with Adsense.

1. Not Knowing How To Properly Analyze Competition

The best way to play the keyword game is to find phrases that are easy to rank for. Understanding how to evaluate the sites that currently rank for keywords is a skill you can’t live without. People that don’t understand this process almost always fail with keywords. After using the methods that people have been preaching for years, I can tell you that they are ridiculously flawed. We will show you how to do analysis that actually teaches you something.

2. Lack Of Understanding The Google Machine

Google is actually a lot less complicated than it seems. If you don’t understand the process Google uses to rank pages, you’ll never succeed in achieving top rankings for phrases. One of our main goals in creating The Keyword Academy is educating good people on how Google works. Since Google currently has more than a 62% market share in the search market, you have to understand how it works to be able to play this game well.

3. People Give Up Way Too Soon

After working with literally hundreds of people, I can tell you that most people struggle with the persistence necessary to make money with keywords. Getting rankings in Google and other search engines takes time. You have to learn the concepts and then apply them with consistency and persistence until they work. Once they work, they will pay you for a very long time.

People often express to me that they don’t think they’re on the right track because it’s taking a while to get results. The truth is that you may be at a mental disadvantage because you haven’t watched a site grow toward success before. If this is the case for you, you will probably need to latch on to someone who understands how this works. We’ll do our absolute best to help you to understand how this normally plays out.
