The Beginner’s Guide To Making Money With Keywords

It all begins with Google…

Millions (literally) of people each day use Google to find things they need. More specifically, they use Google to search for web pages that provide information they need or want. If you can get Google to recommend your web page, you can take a remarkable stream of daily visitors – for free.

Important Fact: Google owns nearly 70% of the search market.

The first thing you have to understand if you want to learn to make money with keywords is that traffic is money. If you can bring visitors to a page, you can inevitably produce income.

Basic Strategy For Making Money With Keywords

  • Select keywords that you can get traffic with.
  • Set up web pages that can get traffic with selected keywords.
  • Implement strategies to create income from keyword traffic.

I hope that these steps don’t seem too difficult. The entire process can’t be learned overnight, but it isn’t rocket science either.

How Much Can People Make With Keywords?

Now that is a truly loaded question, but I want to answer it because it’s one that I get all the time. I have some very close friends that consistently make over $20,000 per month this way. In my best month my websites made over $25,000 from keyword traffic.

Can Anyone Make Money With Keywords?

My honest answer is yes and no. Can anyone be a lawyer? Probably. A lot of people that aren’t lawyers could become lawyers. Will most people do what it takes to become one? Yeah right!

Most people are too lazy to do something great. Most people are too lazy to run their own business and the first thing you need to understand about making money with keywords is that it’s a business.

If you have persistence and determination, you can make money this way. If you don’t, get (or keep) a job.

How Long Does It Take To Learn To Make Money With Keywords?

It took me about six months. My biggest problem was finding the right educators because honestly I had no idea where to begin. I had a head start because I was working at an internet marketing firm, but in retrospect they had absolutely no idea what they were doing.

I want to help put you on the right path, but ultimately you will determine your own success. Some people will go through my courses and will make great money, others will be too lazy to get even one site up and running. I have students who I have helped to create over $10,000 per month from scratch and have many others that never left the gate. Trust me, the difference isn’t the quality of education, the difference is you.

How Do People Get Started Making Money This Way?

The first thing you need to learn is how to find keywords that actually get searched for. The tool I use to find out search volume is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. You can type in any word, and the tool will show you hundreds of related keyword phrases, along with their corresponding search volumes. Make sure to set the match type to ‘exact’ when you use this tool.

The search volumes with the Adwords tool are listed per month so they reflect approximately how many times each keyword phrase is searched for on a monthly basis.

Interesting Fact: You can usually get about 40% of the total search volume with a #1 ranking.

Some keywords are searched for very little, and some are searched for a lot. Getting ranked #1 in Google for ’simpsons disco guy’ might only bring you an average of one visitor per day. Getting ranked #1 for ‘food’ would probably bring you more than 80,000 visitors per day. What’s the difference here? The amount of times people search for these keywords.

How Should Competition Be Judged?

The most highly searched for keywords are actually usually not the best ones to go after. Since competition is extremely high for those keywords, they are often quite difficult to get ranked for. The keywords you want to go after don’t have super strong sites going after them. You want to choose keywords with weaker competition.

I can’t pretend that everything about judging competition can be written in a few paragraphs. It’s more complicated than that. To help you learn about this, I have created a series of emails called “Five Days To Success With Keywords.” This series is 100% free and can be downloaded by entering your email here:

Email:

The first thing I take a look at is the PageRank of the sites that are ranked. By installing the Google toolbar, you can see how strong Google considers each competing page to be. The scale is 1-10 and when you’re starting out, you will want to choose keywords that have weaker sites ranked. You probably want to see sites there that are PageRank 2 or less.

After you get some experience, you can start to target keyword phrases that are a lot more difficult.

How Do People Target Keywords?

Learning this process isn’t going to happen all at once, but here are some of the basics:

  • Use the keyword prominently on the page – HTML title is highly recommended
  • Use the keyword a few times on the page
  • Link to similar pages within your site with the page

My email series will help you to learn this aspect, and there’s a lot of other reading I can provide for you. Start here: Introduction to SEO.

What Does Google Use To Determine Rankings?

Google uses a lot of different things to determine which pages rank where. The most important factor, however, is the quantity and quality of links that are pointing at pages. If your page has more or better links pointing at it than mine, you will out rank me.

Getting links is your most important task if you’re going to make money with keywords. Since I couldn’t possibly list every method you need to know in this guide, please take a look around the site and sign up for my email series.

How Do People Make Money From Traffic?

There are literally hundreds of ways you can go about making money from keyword targeted traffic, but the easiest way to do it is with Google Adsense. Installing Google ads on your page will get you paid on any site, as long as you have traffic. I would recommend starting there and then learning affiliate marketing after that.

Google has deals with tens of thousands of advertisers, and Adsense allows you to do a revenue split with them. Google keeps half of the money generated (approximately) and gives the rest to you. The program is 100% free to use.

This Is The Beginner’s Guide!!

This guide is meant to provide you with a basic overview of how people make money with keywords. If you’re just starting out, you have quite a bit of learning to still do. Keep reading, learning, and working and before you know it, you’ll be a keyword master.

  1. Good basic explanation Court. Enjoying your new site. Looking forward to more of your posts.

  2. I’m following the posts, reading the emails, enjoying watching my blog grow (though still really small), I’m still too limited to believe I could leave my job for it. Would be nice though, I’ll keep working on getting through the looking glass.

  3. So far I’ve made $0.43 on my blog and I just started it on October 29th. Y’all may laugh at that and I’m okay with it. This is my first attempt at monetizing a blog and I am a willing student. My goal is to become a full time blogger but until then, my day job will continue.

Court, thanks for the info and push towards determination. It is just what I need.

  6. Hi Chic –

Just checked our mailing list; it says you’ve received four messages. You might want to check your spam filter and make sure you’ve whitelisted our email address.

  7. They say that success is falling down 9 times and getting up 10.

Court, you opened my eyes to the possibilities of Adsense and keywords.

I had used Adsense – on a site about dogs – and your “pet tracking” case (from the email series) study REALLY struck a chord with me. I had a VERY similar experience to yours. I was #1 – getting 20K visitors a week and making VERY little money.

Then, I followed your advice and looked at some more “profitable” areas and what do you know! YOU WERE RIGHT!

“If you have persistence and determination, you can make money this way. If you don’t, get (or keep) a job.”

    AMEN!!!

  8. Wow! That’s all I can say. What a fantastic post. I do have one question though, you’re not talking about Adwords right? You’re talking about natural search traffic by adding keywords to your pages naturally. I just want to make sure.

  9. Court,

Thanks for all the great SEO information, I’m new to all of this and am trying to soak up as much as possible. One thing – When you do a google search result for a certain keyword phrase and check the PageRank of the competing sites, do you check their main domain for PageRank or just check the URL that comes up in the search? I’ve found that many of those Ranks vary wildly and don’t make much sense to me.

    Thanks

    -Brian

  10. Also – how to do actually get traffic if you go after keywords with low competition? Is is true that all the keywords that have decent search volume have high competition and are already “taken over” by big sites?
