The Income-Crippling Fear Of Google Changes

This morning I wanted to discuss something briefly that I have seen affect literally thousands of people in the last few years. When people are learning to make money with SEO, there are several things that can throw them off and perhaps the biggest of these concerns is the fear that Google will change.

People are afraid that they will put in a ton of time so that their site will rank well in Google, and then Google will change the way they rank pages, leaving sites with no traffic. If this fear is a concern for you, hopefully this post will shed some light and can help you to overcome this classic pitfall.

The truth is that I don’t work at Google and I can’t predict the future. However, Google is the king of the jungle for a reason – they don’t turn the world upside down all at once. They make a small tweak here and a smaller tweak there. Frankly, their search engine is too good to do anything huge from one day to the next.

I first started making money by getting Google traffic through SEO about four years ago. The honest truth guys is that SEO is much easier now than it was then. Back then spammers were having a lot more success than they are now. Google has become a lot better at getting rid of that spam so the SERPS are a lot easier to get into if you’re not a spammer.

Google isn’t going to change the way they rank pages anytime soon. Sure, they will continue to do their little tweaks here and there but by far the best way to determine relevancy is the way they are currently doing it. If they do change something, all we’re going to have to do is look at what happened and maybe get a few more of a certain type of links and if you have friends and/or followers of your site(s) this should be a piece of cake.

If you want to do well with Google, you need to end this vicious cycle and get started. People’s fear of losing what they have gained keeps them from making the gain in the first place and this doesn’t make any sense to me.

  1. Still shaking…But thanks for the encouraging words.
    (Don’t drop my Google)

  2. I really don’t pay attention to Google too much these days because if I did I would probably lose my mind. They seem to change there algrothims way too much for me to keep up with.

    • Donny I hear you. Here’s something to consider for you. Usually if you’re moving up and down quite a bit it’s evidence that either your link profile isn’t strong enough yet or that your site is too new. After you build up a stronger link profile and get a little age, you’ll find that your site pretty much sits in the same spots. There will still be some slight movement but it will slow down a lot. I’m not sure what level you’re at but after I saw this happen quite a few times I started to see that Google didn’t change as much as I had originally thought.

  3. I totally agree, I don’t see Google suddenly changing their whole tactic, no company in its right mind would do that, it’s putting everything on risk and in such a competitive market, that’s a HUGE risk!

    • Definitely Chris. Google is already ahead of the game and a major shift would be more likely to drop market share than gain it. Any changes that come will happen very gradually and we’ll be able to stay on top of it. I don’t see them going away from using links to gauge keyword authority for a very long time, if ever.

  4. Hi Court,

I’ve run into this “fear” often when expressing my views on SEO. It runs hand in hand with all the other “Google will Ban me – Google will erase your blogspot blog – Google is evil” paralysis that is prevalent in so many people. Sure, G could do lots of things but people tend to forget that they are a corporate giant with a lot of salaries to pay and shareholders to keep happy. They are winning, things are working fairly well, they don’t need to make any major changes and you are so right – they will plod along tweaking this and that but they will not risk anything that could upset the cart.

Perhaps these reasons for not implementing SEO are just more excuses a lot of folk seem to find for not doing anything. You and I and most of your readers know one thing – G is where the money is and playing their game has been profitable. When it ceases to be I’m sure we won’t wish we had never bothered. Let’s hope it doesn’t stop but if it does I’m sure we will just learn a new game.

    • Grizz as always, it’s great to have you stop by. The funny thing to me is that those of us that have been around the block a few times see that things don’t really change that much and people that won’t do the work think that G changes drastically every 27 seconds. What worked for me four years ago pretty much works today.

  5. I recently had lost SiteLinks I had for a site for exactly 2 weeks. Obviously Google had done a tweak, and i got them back. It was holiday season but the loss of sitelinks didn’t seem to drop my traffic much, if at all.

But if people are scared to get into internet marketing, that means more money for us!

  6. Court and Mark,
It is so great to read a positive and constructive post, so many so called IM’ers are out there bitching and moaning about these links are dead, and Google is ignoring those links, and that link is bad, or SEO is dead, meanhwile, I am just building links and using simple SEO strategies and getting to Page 1 and outranking all the winers. HA! HA! Thanks for the truth and reality checks that you guys are so good at!

Excellent Post! I see this every day online. I call it the “what if”

  9. I am just getting around to reading this keyword academy blog and it might come up in a later post, but my income went to practically zero when all my BANS sites were deindexed by Google. I hope you are going to mention the effects of getting deindexed and how to avoid getting deindexed, if that is possible. I am ready to add Adsense to my income stream now, and still do make money with the eBay Partner Network, but I have chosen to use other platforms besides BANS. I know some folks are still doing fine with BANS but I am not one of them and it has been more beneficial to try other things than to try to get those sites reindexed by asking for reinclusion – I chose not to do that.

I am glad I did not know about getting deindexed before I started this online marketing journey, else I might not have ever started. Getting deindexed sure taught me a lot, but it was not an easy lesson.
