Seperate Link Page: Yay or Nay?

Is having a link page on my website okay, or is it in fact a detriment? Same question for links to my site from other link pages. Everything on these pages is relevant to my niche, but I know Grizz has called link pages a "total waste of time," and I've heard people advise against them. Keep in mind that these are the only links I have been able to get thus far, and I figured something is better than nothing. What do you guys suggest?

Oh, and this is embarrassing, but when I saw the "inactive" text under my name I mistook the tag box as the search box and tried to search for what that meant. I guess I'm living up to my newbie status. So yes, please ignore that stupid tag since wordpress won't let me delete it.

Hi Kitt. If that's all you can get, please join our link exchange group on yahoo. It's only for KWA members.

Like you, in the beginning, that was all I could get but I didn't want to put THEIR link on my main page when they're putting MY link on a links page. What I did was create a links page and when someone insists on putting MY link on a links page, I do the same.

I don't seek out these type of links, they always come to me. If the site is relevant and doesn't have a million links on it, I'll do it, but they go on my links page.

I don't rely on these types of links and they only make up a small part of my link exchanges.

Link pages unfortunately a waste of your time, and I would never give an in-post link in exchange for a link on a links page. If someone offers a links page link, ask for something on an actual page and if they refuse you just need to move on.

And yes, putting a links page on your site would also be a bit of a waste.

When I was a newbie blogger I had a site that had a "links" page. What is funny is it was not even an exchange page, it was just one to links that I thought were neat or helpful. I can't prove it, but I do think that page was the reason my site dropped from PR4 to PR2 - and even though I deleted it I still haven't regained that PR4 unfortunately.

I have one site that has a link page, that is an old site I started years ago to help some people, but it is not monetized and the links are "show us your stuff" type, and all the links are users submitted. It has never helped not hurt the site.

Alright, I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing. I'm going to make the page a bit more discreet in its purpose in case Chelle's theory is right, and I'm also going to stop wasting my time trying to get link exchanges in this manner. Oh, and Joanne's group seems great so far, so hopefully I can start getting some actual, beneficial links.
